چکیده

There are several reasons why this book might be of interest to a TEX user. First, LTEX has a prominent place in the book. Second, the book describes a very interesting offshoot of literate programming, a topic traditionally popular in the TEX community. Third, since a number of TEX users work with data analysis and statistics, R could be a useful tool for them. Since some TUGboat readers are likely not familiar with R, I would like to start this review with a short description of the software. R [1] is a free implementation of the S language (sometimes R is called GNU S). The latter is a language for statistical computations created at Bell Labs during its “Golden Age” of computing, when C, awk, Unix, et al. were developed at this famous institution. S is very convenient for a data exploration. For example, consider the dataset iris (included in the base R distribution) containing measurements of 150 flowers of Iris setosa, Iris versicolor and Iris virginica [2]. We may inquire whether petal length and petal width of irises are related. To this end we can plot the data:

Investigating the independent evolution of the size of floral organs via G-matrix estimation and artificial selection.

The attractiveness of a plant to pollinators is dependent on both the number of flowers produced and the size of the petals. However, limiting resources often result in a size/number trade-off, whereby the plant can make either more flowers or larger flowers, but not both. If developmental genes underlying sepal and petal identity (some of which overlap) also influence size, then this shared ge...

Natural Variation Identifies Multiple Loci Controlling Petal Shape and Size in Arabidopsis thaliana

Natural variation in organ morphologies can have adaptive significance and contribute to speciation. However, the underlying allelic differences responsible for variation in organ size and shape remain poorly understood. We have utilized natural phenotypic variation in three Arabidopsis thaliana ecotypes to examine the genetic basis for quantitative variation in petal length, width, area, and s...

[Molecular mapping of the gene(s) controlling petal-loss trait in Brassica napus].

An F2 population derived from a cross between apetalous line' APT02 'and normal petalled cultivar 'ZS NO.4' was used for molecular marker searching and chromosomal mapping of the gene(s) controlling petal-loss trait in Brassica napus. Twenty pairs of AFLP primers and 170 pairs of SRAP primers were selected and screened from two parents. In further selection through bulked segregant analysis (BS...

Multivariate analysis of morphological characteristics of two species of passion flower with ornamental potential and of hybrids between them.

We estimated genetic parameters through multivariate analysis of two species of Passiflora and their hybrids, considered of ornamental potential, based on the morphological characteristics: flower diameter, corona diameter, corona filament size, flower peduncle length, petal length and width, sepal length and width, internode length, stem diameter, leaf length, leaf width (mm), and leaf ar...

Room-temperature ferromagnetism in graphitic petal arrays.

We report room-temperature ferromagnetism of graphitic petal arrays grown on Si substrates by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition without catalyst. The samples have been characterized by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to confirm the absence of possible ferromagnetic impurities. The petals exhibit ferromagnetic hysteresis with saturation magnetization of ∼4.67 emu cm(-3) and c...
